Which scrolls are worth it

Every scroll you use takes up an upgrade slot, pass or fail. Here is what each tier adds on average, what a point of attack costs at today's prices, and when a Chaos scroll is worth the risk.

Average per slot
STR, DEX, INT, LUK scrolls
Lesser · 100%+1
Intermediate · 60%+1.2
Greater · 10%+0.3
Chaos · 10%+0.4 · 45% boom
1. The short answer
  1. Use Intermediate scrolls for attack and statsAt 60% for +2 they average 1.2 a slot, more than the sure +1 of a Lesser. Over a 7-slot weapon that is +8.4 Weapon Attack on average against +7.
  2. Use Lesser scrolls for Max HP and MPA sure +10 a slot beats the Intermediate 60% scroll, which averages 9.
  3. On cheap gear, buy whatever costs least per pointWhen you can buy another clean item, its slots are cheap and the price of a point is what counts. Right now the cheapest Weapon Attack is the Dagger Attack Scroll: Lesser at 28,888 mesos a point. The cheapest Magic Attack is the Staff Magic Attack Scroll: Lesser at 30,000 mesos a point.
  4. Skip Greater scrollsThey never destroy anything, but 10% for +3 averages 0.3 a slot, against 1 for a Lesser. Each one wastes most of a slot.
  5. Treat Chaos scrolls as a lotteryEach one has a 45% chance to destroy the item. A 7-slot weapon scrolled with them all the way survives 1.5% of the time. Use them only on an item you can afford to lose.
  6. Scroll attack firstAt level 50 one Weapon Attack is worth about 4 points of your main stat, and one Magic Attack is worth 2 INT. Weapon first, then gloves, then your main stat (see What to scroll first).
2. The four scroll tiers

Every scroll comes in four tiers. A higher tier adds more when it passes but passes less often, and only Chaos can break the item. Since the slot is used up either way, compare tiers by what they add on average per slot: the gain times the success rate.

"Stats" is every STR, DEX, INT, LUK, Accuracy, Evasion, Speed and Jump scroll; "Weapons" and "Gloves" are their Weapon Attack scrolls.

  • Magic Attack on gloves adds +2 / +4 / +6 / +8, so Intermediate is the best per slot there too.
  • Defense scrolls add Weapon DEF, and from Intermediate up some Magic DEF as well (Lesser +2 Weapon Def. · Intermediate +4 Weapon Def., +2 Magic Def. · Greater +6 Weapon Def., +4 Magic Def. · Chaos +8 Weapon Def., +6 Magic Def.)
  • Max HP and MP are the one place the Lesser wins: its +10 is worth more than Intermediate's +15 at 60%.
  • Classic World's Chaos is not the old game's Chaos Scroll: it adds a fixed amount like the other tiers, it doesn't shuffle the item's stats.

How to scrollThe item has to be equipped. Open your equipment window, then drag the scroll from the Use tab of your inventory onto the item. Each try uses one of the item's upgrade slots ("Remaining Enhancements" on the tooltip), whether it passes or not.

3. Scrolling a whole item

The Weapon Attack a 7-slot One-Handed Sword ends up with if you use one tier in every slot, worked out over every way the scrolls can land. A destroyed item counts as +0. Want to feel the odds? The Scroll Simulator lets you scroll a pretend item as often as you like.

PlanAverageBeats +7Below +7DestroyedBest case
Lesser in every slot +7 0% 0% 0% +7 (100%)
Intermediate in every slot +8.4 71% 29% 0% +14 (2.8%)
Greater in every slot +2.8 15% 85% 0% +28 (1 in 10,000,000)
Chaos in every slot +0.1 0.6% 99% 98% +35 (1 in 10,000,000)
Intermediate, then Chaos in the last slot +4.5 34% 66% 45% +17 (0.5%)
  • Intermediate gives the most on average and beats an all-Lesser item 71% of the time, but 29% of the time it ends up below it. If you want a sure number, use Lesser.
  • Greater all the way averages +2.8. It beats +7 only 15% of the time, and its +28 jackpot is 1 in 10,000,000.
  • Chaos all the way destroys the weapon 98% of the time. Even one Chaos scroll in the last slot of an Intermediate-scrolled weapon loses the whole item 45% of the time.
4. What each gear slot takes

Each scroll works on one kind of gear only, and each piece of gear has a set number of upgrade slots. The counts here are what most items of each kind have; check the tooltip of yours.

Crit scrollsClassic World adds Earring Crit. Damage Scroll, Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll. Without crit skills, +1 Crit. Rate adds about 0.20% to your average damage and +1 Crit. Damage about 0.05%, against 1.25% for one Weapon Attack at 80 attack. Leave them until your attack is scrolled. This assumes +1 means one percentage point, which isn't confirmed.

5. Best buys right now

"A point" is the scroll's price divided by what it adds on average, so you can compare tiers and scrolls. The cheaper of Lesser and Intermediate is marked for each scroll. Greater is sometimes cheaper per point, but it wastes most of every slot, and Chaos prices (*) leave out the item you may lose. "Intermediate's extra" is what each point of its extra 0.2 a slot costs over Lesser.

6. What to scroll first

Attack first. Weapon Attack multiplies everything else, so at level 50 (about 250 main stat and 80 attack) one point of it adds about as much damage as 4 points of your main stat. Then come the slots that hold your main stat. Each chip shows what Intermediate scrolls add over all of the item's slots on average, and the cheapest point today.

7. Where scrolls come from

Crafting them: Arcforger

Arcforgers make Lesser scrolls from Arcforging level 2. Add a Scroll Crafting Catalyst to the recipe for a chance at an Intermediate, Greater or Chaos scroll of the same kind instead. The cost is the materials at market prices plus the fee, without the catalyst.

Right now 12 of these cost less to craft than players ask. The Cape LUK Scroll: Lesser saves the most: about 23,047 to craft against 64,999 from players. See the Arcforger recipes for the materials.

All 24 scroll recipes

Quest rewards

These quests give a scroll. Some let you pick which one, others give one at random. Hover an icon for its name.

Monsters, shops and citizenship

Monsters drop scrolls, some NPC shops sell them, and Henesys and Kerning City sell stronger ones to their citizens (see Town citizenship). The game data doesn't say which shops or drops, so use the price check to find what players sell.

8. Questions

Does a failed scroll use up a slot?

Yes. Every scroll you use takes one of the item's upgrade slots, whether it works or not. When none are left, the item can't be scrolled any more.

Which is better, the 100% or the 60% scroll?

For stats and attack, the Intermediate (60%) one: it adds 2 per pass, 1.2 a slot on average against 1 from the Lesser. For Max HP and MP the Lesser wins: 10 a slot against 9.

Do 10% scrolls destroy items?

Greater scrolls never do: a failure only costs the slot. Chaos scrolls destroy the item on 50% of failures, so each one you use has a 45% chance to take the item with it.

Are Chaos scrolls worth it?

Only as a gamble on an item you can afford to lose. They add less per slot on average than a Lesser or Intermediate scroll, and a 7-slot weapon scrolled with Chaos all the way is destroyed 98.5% of the time.

What should I scroll first?

Attack. Your weapon first, then your gloves. At level 50 one Weapon Attack adds about as much damage as 4 points of your main stat, and one Magic Attack as much as 2 INT.

Can I scroll an item in my inventory?

No. The item has to be equipped: open your equipment window and drag the scroll from your Use tab onto it.

9. Sources & notes
  • From the game data: every scroll's success rate, gain and destroy chance (read from its own text), the upgrade slots of each kind of gear (the count most items have), the Arcforger's recipes and the quest rewards. They update when the game does.
  • From Nexon: a scroll uses up the slot whether it passes or not, the item has to be equipped, and where scrolls come from (Item Enhancement - Scrolls, Nexon's Classic World guide).
  • Calculated: the average per slot is the gain times the success rate. The whole-item table adds up every way the scrolls can land, exactly. "A point" is the price divided by the average per slot. Player prices are the median HubCW sale of the last 30 days, or the median Free Market ask when nothing sold; a dash means neither.
  • Attack against main stat uses the community damage formula the class guides use (attack × (0.9 + secondary stat ÷ 100 + main stat × weapon multiplier ÷ 100)) for an example Lv. 50 character: 250 main stat, 60 secondary, 80 attack, multiplier 2.5. Your own ratio moves with your gear; it's about 4 for most builds at this level.
  • Not confirmed: what +1 Crit. Rate or Crit. Damage means (taken as one percentage point), and the base critical chance (5%) and bonus (20%) the class guides use.
